Gravel and limerock driveways
A compacted base of limerock or crushed concrete, finished with clean stone if you want a loose gravel look.

Depth4–6 in of base, plus 2–3 in of top stone
Step by step
- 1
Strip grass and roots, and grade so water runs off the drive, not toward the house.
- 2
Spread limerock or crushed concrete in 2–3 inch lifts, wetting and compacting each one.
- 3
For a gravel finish, add 2–3 inches of #57 or shell rock on top of the compacted base.
- 4
Add edging along lawns and beds so stone stays on the drive.
Watch for
- Low spots that hold water need fill before base goes down.
- Check HOA and city rules on driveway materials.
