Patios, paver walks and paths

Pavers need a compacted base and an inch of bedding sand. Loose paths are simpler: edging, fabric and pea gravel.

Depth4 in base + 1 in sand for pavers; 2–3 in for gravel paths

Step by step

    Excavate to depth and compact the soil.

  2. 2

    Lay and compact the base in lifts; check slope away from the house.

  3. 3

    Screed one even inch of paver sand and set pavers without walking on the sand.

  4. 4

    For gravel paths, lay landscape fabric inside edging, then spread pea gravel.

Watch for

  • Pea gravel moves under chairs; use screenings where furniture sits.
  • Keep pool deck runoff in mind.
